Project Objective: Make a 3-poster series for the imagined poetry reading event Elusive Echoes: Exploring Poetic Soundscapes. Each poster would reflect the identity of a poet: Patti Smith, Charmaigne Lee, and JJJJJerome Ellis. I found that the poets shared a passion for raw expression of their inner selves, and I chose to focus on this in my work.
Research
I started by researching my assigned poets. I read articles, and interviews, and listened to their music. I noted what made them similar and different. While Patti Smith was more vulgar, and Charmaigne Lee more abstract, they all shared a passion for true, raw expression.
Word Play
Manipulating letter and word forms by twisting, folding, and stretching them creates exciting visual outcomes. This manipulation questions the nature of type and words themselves.
Design System
Digital Sketching
I was inspired to place the writings of the poets into concentric circles. The circles symbolized soundwaves, records, and movement, as well as the raw emotions emanating from the poets.
Color Exploration
Compositions
Finally, I chose to use bright colors for each poster and have just the artist's name as the main text, with the other text residing in the frame around the circles
